FORMER UNION COMMUNICATION MINISTER SENTENCED TO UNDERGO FIVE YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT WITH FINE OF RS.4 LAKH IN A CBI CASE

The Special Court (CBI Cases), Rohini, New Delhi has today sentenced Shri Sukh Ram, Former Union Communication Minister, Govt.of India to undergo five years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.4 lakh. He was convicted on 17.11.2011 U/s 120 B IPC r/w Sec.7 and Sec.13(2) r/w 13(1(d) of PC Act and for substantive offence u/s 7 and Sec.13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988 in case RC 1(A)/96/CBI/ACU-V/New Delhi.

The instant case was registered against Shri Sukhram and Shri Devinder Singh Choudhary, Chairman of Haryana Telecom Ltd., Rohtak on 22.11.1996. It was alleged that Shri Sukhram, while functioning as Minister of State, Deptt.of Communications, Govt. of India during 1994-95 abused his official position and in conspiracy with Shri Devinder Singh Choudhary, awarded contract to Haryana Telecom Ltd. for supply of excess quantity of cables to the tune of Rs.30 crores by ignoring the recommendations of Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) and thereby caused undue pecuniary advantage to the said company and to himself by obtaining illegal gratification from Shri Devinder Singh Choudhary for showing him favours.

The FIR was registered following recovery of huge amount of around Rs.3.5 crores which included an amount of Rs.3 lacs in cash alongwith one visiting card of Shri D.S.Choudhary during search of residential premises of Shri Sukhram at Mandi, Himachal Pradesh on 16.8.1996 in case RC:3(A)/96/CBI/ACU-IV/New Delhi. Shri Sukhram has already been convicted in the mentioned case.

The chargesheet in the instant case was filed on 1.6.1998 against Shri Sukhram and Shri Devinder Singh Choudhary and charges were framed on 1.6.2002. Shri D.S.Choudhary died on 5.12.2009 while undergoing trial.
